ABI (Automated Broker Interface)
ABI (Automated Broker Interface) is the electronic link that brokers and importers use to send entry data to CBP and get replies from ACE.
What does ABI (Automated Broker Interface) mean?
ABI lets participants transmit data to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and receive messages back from ACE. CBP states its purposes as efficiency, better enforcement, lower costs and faster release of cargo (19 CFR 143.1).
Customs brokers, importers and ABI service bureaus can take part for entry and entry summary data. A service bureau supplies the software and the communications only. It does not conduct customs business.
A new participant sends CBP a letter of intent. The letter gives the participant's entry filer code and its average monthly volume (19 CFR 143.2).
Some transactions do not go through ABI. For example, CBP takes IEEPA refund requests only as CAPE Declarations in the ACE Portal, not through ABI.
What does it mean for your shipment?
We transmit entries and entry summaries through ABI under our filer code, 9AJ. An importer does not need its own ABI connection when a broker files for it.
